Complete Sequence of Swine Deltacoronavirus

The University of Minnesota has released a complete swine deltacoronavirus (SDCV) genome (strain SDCV/USA/Illinois121/2014, GenBank accession number KJ481931). Since only 3 SDCV sequences are available worldwide, very limited phylogenetic conclusions are available. The US SDCV has a complete genome nucleotide percent identity of 99.0% and 99.2% to the previously reported Chinese SDCV strains HKU15-44 and HKU15-155, respectively. Compared to the Chinese strains, the spike gene segment was the most divergent (98.8% similar) while the envelop gene segment was the most conserved (99.6% similar). The SDCV pathogenesis and introduction into the U.S. are still unknown. We will continue to sequence more complete SDCV genomes and partner with worldwide collaborators to further identify and understand SDCV strain diversity.
