PRRS Corner: 2013 PRRS Resurgence Delayed 3 Weeks
December 24, 2013 —
According to the data collected by the National PRRS Incidence Project at the University of Minnesota, the annual upswing in PRRS cases did not cross the epidemic threshold until November 6 this year. Over the previous four years, the date had been remarkably consistent with cases reaching the epidemic level during the late second or third week in October.
The project now includes 372 sow farms with 1.2 million sow farms, from 14 production companies in 15 states. Using the Exponentially Weighted Moving Average, the researchers signaled the onset of the PRRSv epidemic on 11/6/13 - about 2 or 3 weeks later than the previous 4 years. Since July 1, 2013 about 9% (33) of the herds in the database have reported a new infection.
