AASV Pig Welfare Committee to Review Sow Housing Position

At the request of the AASV Executive Committee, the Pig Welfare Committee is currently reviewing the association’s position statement on Pregnant Sow Housing. The position statement was last reviewed in 2002 and the Executive Committee asked the Welfare Committee to take a look at the policy to ensure it was consistent with current research and veterinary opinion. Any policy changes recommended by the committee would be considered by the Board of Directors during its fall meeting in October.

The Welfare Committee was also asked to consider the science exploring any impact on fetal survivability in systems housing sows individually post-breeding versus group housing throughout gestation.
