American Humane Certified approves FASS standards

The American Humane Association's American Humane Certified farm animal care program and the Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS) have announced that American Humane Certified has approved the FASS animal welfare standards.

The standards, published as the " FASS Ag Guide" in January, were developed by engineers, scientists and veterinarians who are experts in farm animal care and well-being and who devoted more than a year to developing the standards to reflect current science for farm animal care.

The document has been peer reviewed and was approved by American Humane Certified's scientific advisory committee.

Having this advisory committee approve the standards gives "added credence to this important document," said the FASS writing committee's co-chairs Janice Swanson at Michigan State University and John McGlone at Texas Tech University.

The FASS standards are "a move toward baseline standards that will be universally accepted by other animal science and welfare groups and by producers," said American Humane Certified vice president Tim Amlaw.
